The Bible’s Answer
The Bible’s answer to this question is yes, Jesus Christ is the Creator of all things in existence. Because Jesus created everything, he was never himself created. The Gospel of John proclaims that Jesus is God, the Word who was with the Father in the beginning, through whom “all things were made”:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. (John 1:1–3, ESVUK)
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. (John 1:10)
Paul proclaims in his letter to the Colossians that Jesus is pre-eminent (the firstborn) over all creation because he created all things, in the heavens and on the Earth:
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. (Colossians 1:15–16)
In Paul’s epistle to the Hebrews, we are told that creation was both the work of the Father and the Son, because the Father created the world through the Son:
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. (Hebrews 1:1–2)
Furthermore, in Hebrews, Paul also applies to Jesus an Old Testament passage that was directed to Yahweh (God’s personal name). Thus, the Bible teaches that Jesus and Yahweh are one and the same, and that the same Yahweh who laid the foundation of the Earth and created the heavens in the beginning, was none other than Jesus himself:
But of the Son he says, … “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment, like a robe you will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will have no end. (Hebrews 1:8, 10–12) (See also Psalm 102:25–27)
Therefore, as can be seen in all of the above quotations, the Bible consistently makes it clear that Jesus is the divine, pre-eminent, and eternal Creator of all things in existence. We were created by Jesus, for Jesus. So let’s give him the proper credit and glory he deserves, and praise him, offering up our lives to him as our spiritual worship, for he is the giver of life, and not only temporal life, but also eternal life to all who believe in him as Saviour and Redeemer.
