The Bible’s Answer
Yes, God loves you. He loves you more than you can possibly imagine. The height and depth of God’s love for you is most clearly seen in the cross of Jesus Christ. The Bible says:
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6–8)
Jesus Died for You
All people in the world are sinners without exception (Romans 3:23). This means that we have broken God’s commandments and wronged him and our fellow human beings. The greatest act of love is to sacrifice yourself for your friend, but Jesus surpassed even that: he laid down his life not for his friends, but for sinners—for people who deserve nothing other than God’s eternal punishment and wrath (Matthew 25:46). Jesus, who is God in flesh, the Second Person of the Trinity (John 1:1–3, 14), performed the greatest act of love for you and everyone in the world, so that we can be freed from the consequences of sin (Romans 8:1). The Bible says:
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (1 John 4:9–10)
Propitiation means payment. When Christ suffered and died upon the cross, he paid for our sins fully as our substitute. It wasn’t because of anything good that we did that God chose to send his Son into the world for us. It wasn’t because of any inherent good quality in us that God chose to save us. God sent his only Son, Jesus, into the world simply because of his eternal love for humanity. God loves you and he wants you to have eternal life with him forever in Heaven. God doesn’t want to punish anyone; instead, he wants all people to be saved from sin and to come to a knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:3–4).
How to Receive Forgiveness From God
If you trust in Jesus as your Saviour who died for all your sins on the cross and believe that God raised him from the dead on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3–4), you can be assured that God has forgiven you all your sins (Colossians 1:13–14), and that he’s prepared a place for you in Heaven (John 14:1–3; 1 John 5:13). God will dwell within you and will never leave you until the day that he calls you home to Heaven (John 14:16–17, 23).
